Skeptical ??

I get all sorts of questions all day.  Recently a lady text me and asked "what are you REALLY selling and what can I expect to get???

Well, thanks for asking.

Brooke Training is a legit deal...but it is not easy. You can expect to get a viable business with the potential to make a lot of money, so long as you work the process.  You own the business.  We promise to support you in many ways.

In order to be a success at freight brokering you have to build relationships with traffic managers of large and midsized corporations. We will teach you how to find them.  You also have to build solid relationships with truck drivers.  We will coach you on how to communicate with them.  As a freight broker or freight broker agent, you are the middle man between those two groups.  We teach you negotiating skills.

It won't cost you much or take long to get started as an agent.

Some of my friends are millionaires because they found their niche in this business.  We will teach you how to find a niche.

The great news is that it is your business.  You will be 100 percent responsible for your success.  We will give you a real life proven road map to follow.  We will introduce you to industry leaders.  Then it is up to you to put the newly learned skills to work.

All our instructors, including me, return phone calls.

If you have more questions, call or text.  I have been in this industry for over 3 decades and I've learned a few things along the way.

Monica Jaramillo, Excellent Freight Broker Trainer

Our group of instructors are top notched.  Monica Jaramillo instructs our basic freight broker training as well as our advanced classes in Spanish and English.  Her training skills are incredible.  She is patient, thorough and enjoyable.  Spanish fluency is a big bonus in the transportation industry. Fishing Freight Broker

A great advantage of being a freight broker or freight broker agent is being able to work anywhere with conductivity.   I love fishing, especially at Florida's beautiful white sand beaches and in their turquoise waters.

When I need a fishing excursion to clear my cobwebs, I plan a trip.  I take my phone and my computer with me, get a place that has a good internet connection and I'm good to go.  I can do my work and enjoy some refreshing sea air at the same time.

I believe that atmosphere is very important for mental health.  Working from home is a great perk but can get lonely.  Most of America learned to work from home this past year.  It is important to have a work/home/play balance.  That became a bit of a challenge when home was the workplace.  Since I've been working from home for years it was not an adjustment for me.

In our freight broker training course we teach the skills needed to be successful as a freight broker.  We also share a plethora of advice on how to work from home, how to have that work life balance, how to stay focussed and inspired.  We give detailed information on how to structure the day.  You learn how to set goals with a mission statement for your business.

Being an entrepreneur is exhilarating when you see your plans falling into place.  Each day you succeed in hitting goals you are more inspired to continue on.

We are so proud of the success we see in our graduates.  We would love to take you along for the ride.  Our testimonials say it all.  Read a few, or watch them on video.  Our graduates are not only inspired for their new career they gain new inspiration for life.

Honor Our Veterans

We have the great honor of meeting many veterans.  Since we are certified to train disabled vets through our school, we spend quality time with these heroes.   These are amazing individuals with a perspective on life that has taught me so much about humility and commitment.

Our mantra is to "help the go-getters and the go-givers".  Veterans are both.  They have actively served our country with their lives and given so much muscle and brain power to the peacekeeping mission of the military. We have a compassion for Veterans.  Many come from challenging backgrounds and have no other option for their life than to sign up to serve.  They did what they needed to get the government benefits of service, which includes training in a new career.  We take that benefit very seriously.  We know it was not earned easily.  What an honor to be a part of their new journey.

I actually started my adulthood in a similar same spot.  I thought I had no future because I didn't have the brains nor the money to go to college.  I thought I would live a paycheck to paycheck, barely squeaking by.  With the help of God, some teachers who believed in me and my amazing wife I have found success.  I try to never take that for granted.  My success is a gift I want to share with others.

In order to be certified to train military we completed a lot of reports.  My wife, Janis has spent countless hours preparing immaculate reports.  We are regularly audited which requires large amounts of documentation.  She stays on top of all of this so we can continue to train these men and women of integrity.

We have a group of freight brokers who are at our door every course wanting to hire our veteran graduates to become agents.  These guys don't call in sick.

Probably the most important thing we teach them is how to be an entrepreneur.  We teach what they should do every day between 8-9 a.m. then what they should do from 9-10 a.m. and so on through out the day.  So many end up in grateful tears because they have never been taught these things.   Gratitude is the healthiest of emotions.

My promise to veterans is that everyone associated with Brooke Training finds it a great honor and privilege to work with vets.  We thank you for your service and would love to have you in our class.

Moving forward,

Jeff Roach

Be Your Own Boss

Have you ever thought about being your own boss? As your own boss you can work hard and be a great success but it is all up to you.  As your own boss you can set yourself up for success by planning, training and finding mentors.

A freight broker and freight broker agent are their own boss.  Similar to a real estate agent, they can work as an independent or under a larger agency. I strongly recommend starting as a freight broker agent.  As an agent you are your own boss with a great support system in the brokerage you work through.   Most people choose to start in the freight brokering business as an agent working under the umbrella of a brokerage firm that is bonded and has brokerage authority.  A freight broker agent has less upfront costs that an independent freight broker.  As an agent you do not need a license or a bond.

What are the costs and additional requirements to be a broker or an agent?

TRAINING
I highly recommend training as the first requirement, your first expenditure.  Professionals who take advantage of training, start their career way ahead of those who try to figure it out on their own.  Brooke Transportation Training Solutions would love the opportunity to train you as a freight broker.

Complete training before you spend money on these other things because in training you will figure out your specific needs.

HOME OFFICE

Besides training, a freight broker agent will need to set up a home office with a computer with two screens, a 4 in 1 printer/scanner/fax/copier machine, a desk, chair, file cabinet and office supplies.

PHONE

A freight broker spends a lot of time on the phone.  So a great phone with a headset, unlimited long distance and high speed internet is essential.  I do a lot of business in my truck equipped with bluetooth handsfree phone service.

SOFTWARE

The software available to help in the workings of a freight broker is continually improving.  Subscriptions to software can cost $30 to $150 per month depending on how many services you choose to utilize.  Transportation Managment Software (TMS) and Loadboard software are essentials.

BROKER FEES

Some brokers (but not the majority) charge fees to the agent as a part of their internal business model for such things as marketing, advertising, training and usage of their systems.

LEGAL FEES

If you are going to be a broker you will need to choose a name for your logistics company then set up the legal structure of the company (such as a SCorp, LLC, or other) Your accountant or attorney can advise you on the best choice for your situation.  Fees are set by the professional you select.

BROKERAGE AUTHORITY

File for your brokerage authority with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety (FMCS).  The
Administration filing fee is $300. OP-1 form.  Once you've obtained your registration you'll file a biennial update form MC-150 (no cost).

PROCESS AGENT

One time fee usually $45 to $60.  Submit Form BOC-3 to the FMCS

BUSINESS REGISTRATION

Register your business through the Unified Carrier Registration system.  Current fee is $76 for brokers.

SURETY BOND

Brokers are required to obtain a surety bond or trust fund in the amount of $75,000. Ranges for the broker bond are generally $750 to $9000 depending on your credit situation. The bond is issued by an insurance company that offers freight broker bonds.  The trust fund is generally around $1500 per year and also requires collateral with a bank.

LOCAL REQUIREMENTS

Check with your state for particular requirements to operate a business in that state.

Does being your own boss in the exciting world of transportation peak your interest??

Give me a call.

Business Among Friends

Recently I spent some time talking with Joe, a freight broker friend who has hired brokers from our freight broker school graduates.  I asked him about his experience with Brooke Transportation Training Solutions.  Here's what he said:

I started hiring graduates from Brooke's school about 2 months ago and have been very pleased the level of training they have for such a short course.  I met Jeff about 7 years ago when he came in and did training with the sales staff of the brokerage firm I was working with back then.  I started my own freight brokerage about a year and a half ago. It has been going real well.  So, I needed more agents.  That is when I started going in and interviewing Jeff's graduates.  I offer all his graduates an opportunity to work with our brokerage.

In the last few months I have hired several agents from Brooke's graduates.  It has been a great match.  The graduates come in ready to go. I would recommend BTTS to any freight broker who needs agents.  The key to success with these new agents is on going mentoring after they finish their training.  I spend time encouraging our new agents.  I am sometimes the trainer and sometimes the psychiatrist.  We handle administrative needs of our agents so they can focus on making sales, finding new customers who need our help in transporting their loads.

I love working with Veterans.  I'm a veteran myself.  Lots of vets go through Brooke's training, So finding a great agent who is a vet is easy with Brooke.

The great thing about being a freight broker is you have the ability to earn what you want based on the amount of work you want to put in.  As a broker you have to be persistent.  There will be good and bad days but if you keep at it you will be a success.  Don't give up.

Thanks Joe.  If you are a broker looking for agents, or needing some training for your agents give me a call.  If you are wanting to learn to be a freight broker come to one of our courses soon.  You can meet Joe.

Is It a Job or a Career?

Everybody needs money in order to eat and sleep and go to the movies.  So in order to earn the needed cash you can either go snag a job or step into a career building opportunity.  Becoming a freight broker or freight broker agent is a career move, not just a dead end job.  There is a job to be done as a freight broker, but each job a broker completes with excellence builds a career.  Each load a broker successfully manages puts another trust notch in their belt.

This is not a get rich quick business.  It's a trust business.   Trust can only be built over time.  Yet trust can be broken in an instant.  To build trust you must act with integrity, tell the truth, do what you say you will do and own up to your mistakes.

Only when shippers and carriers trust you will a new broker make it.  It's a long hornet but well worth it.

A short  cut to finding success as a freight broker or freight broker agent is training.
Valuable training is a short cut because you hit the ground running as a freight broker or freight broker agent.   The instructors at Brooke Training have all been in and around the transportation industry for decades.  There is no better way to get a leg up than spend time with those who have already found success in the industry.  It still takes time to build up the trust but with training you will be more equipped to start the process.

If you are interested in a career with amazing potential, give us a call.  I will answer your questions and together we can figure out if you are ready for this exciting, fast-paced career.  We have live and online classes ready to teach you how to build trust and thus build your customer base.

“Very cozy atmosphere, good, even great teacher with an incredible sense of humor.  Very understandable and accessible especially for a person which English is not my native language.   I think I will again enroll in this course, because I love the way she teaches.  Thank you for the knowledge and patience.”  – Ilkwom I

Freight Broker Tips

As a freight broker or freight broker agent you must develop self-motivation, resourcefulness and be persuasive.

As a freight broker or even as an agent you are the one that has to get yourself going everyday. You also need to be self-motivated in order to discipline yourself to constantly make the calls necessary to secure and build your business. Just because you finish the freight broker course and hang your shingle out, the business won’t just start coming to you. YOU go out to them. As you get to know prospects and their needs, you can begin to persuade them why they should want to use you. You need to believe in yourself first for others to believe in you. You need to be resourceful. Be creative and think of ways that you can help make their job easier, and services that you can offer.

Set yourself apart from your competition by offering more and offering unique services if at all possible. Remember that you are a service company, so the more ways that you can think of to bring added values and extra personal customer service to your prospective clients, the better chance you have of winning them over.  A well serviced customer will find value in you and hopefully become a longtime client.

I can’t emphasize enough that winning in this industry is a process that takes time. Focus on daily progress, not perfection. Just like running a marathon- ten more yards every day for a year, and you’re ready to do the marathon.

Husband and Wife, Dynamo Working Team

-->
Looking for a great family business for a husband and wife to work together? Freight brokering/freight broker agent is that business.  Brooke Transportation Training has had many couples attend our freight broker training together.  They can build their business both having the same knowledge and motivation we teach in our classes.  I know in my marriage, my wife is a better listener than I am.  When a husband and wife come they retain different bits of information.  As a broker you work both ends of the lane, both the goods distributor and the carrier.  My wife and I have worked together for a couple of decades.  I’m good at building relationships with customers.  She’s good at details, so she keeps all our paperwork done and pays the bills.

The transportation industry is critical in our economy. Freight brokering is a job that is always needed because we are a consumptive society.  Families spend millions of dollars each week on groceries, clothes, and household needs.  Those needs have to moved from one area of the country to another.

In our last live freight broker training class in Dallas the Davis husband and wife team attended.  This is what they said about the class:

“When my husband and I arrived to Brooke Transportation Training, we figured we would gain some knowledge on being a broker, from day one Mr. Vinny gave us way more insight on the brokering than we expected. We could not have made a better decision on coming to this training.  Brooke Transportation Training is the absolute best.” -- Allison Davis

“Attending this class has been a joyful experience.  Mr. Vinny went above and beyond.  Me and my wife have gained knowledge and understanding to take back with us to officially run a company.  We couldn’t be more excited and grateful for this opportunity.

Brooke Transportation training was the best decision my wife and I could have made.  Mr. Vinny gave us so much knowledge on so many subjects.  It was just a great opportunity for me (us).  And we would do it all over again.  Hopefully this training will help us to be more successful as a broker. “

Get Smart

-->
(Adapted from Interaction Training blog post.)
The more we learn the more we will earn (most likely).  Learning gives us new skills that we can use to earn more, or be more effective in our other endeavors.  But we won’t truly learn unless we are first interested, engaged and see some value in what is being taught.
We forget most of what we hear.  Or perhaps we don’t really hear it in the first place.  We seldom remember the exchange of everyday conversation because our brain is chock-full of stuff already.  Conversations are all around us.  Stories are being shown on televisions and computers on walls of stores, coffee shops and restaurants.  People are engaging in conversation while walking by us or sitting next to us.  There are a whole lot of words being put in the air all day, every day.
If the exchange is meaningful or helpful to you then there is a better than average chance you can recall it.  Engagement, getting involved in the conversation, creates a very distinct file in the brain.
When we only read, look, or listen, that information is instantly processed and filed away in our brain under the junk file marked MISC. It is very hard to recover information in this file of the brain because it is overloaded and info is tossed in there in no particular order. Like taking your trash and junk to the landfill. If you cleaned out that file, you could sort it into four piles: Don’t care, Don’t Understand, Won’t Ever Use, or I Need This. The last pile will be the smallest.
In training, the amount of information that needs to be transferred to learning is staggering if you look at the whole picture. The trainer must breakdown the required knowledge, skills, and attitudes into training modules that call for engagement, relatable stories, and discussion.

So when you look for opportunities to enlarge your base of knowledge make sure the info is taught in a way that is engaging to you.  Otherwise you will waste your time and money in a course that slips out of your brain just about as fast as you heard it.

The instructors at Brooke Transportation Training are amazingly engaging.  I’ve heard their spiels for years and I still find them interesting, informative and entertaining.  Join us at a class near you.

Great Job

I've been in the transportation industry for over 3 decades.  I've spent the bulk of my career as a freight broker, freight broker agent or teaching others the skills of freight brokering.  It has been an amazing ride.  I've made a great income to support my family, I'm my own boss and I have met many incredible people along the way.

As a freight broker I talk to a lot of carriers. Truckers are salt of the earth individuals.  They love America, grandma and apple pie.  They spend a lot of time away from their family on the road but they are family guys.  Truck drivers are a tight knit group because their jobs are unique.  Their truck cab is their office and many have a decked out office.  They take pride in their work and in their rig.  Truck drivers are hard workers who earn their living one mile at a time.

As a freight broker I also talk with a lot of manufacturers or product distributors.  Their job is to get their products to market. I negotiate how that is going to happen.  If I make sure their loads get delivered where they want, when they want then I make their day.  A key element in getting a keeping good customers is consistency in delivery.  Of course there will be weather, traffic and truck breakdowns delays.  So long as I let my customer know there is a potential slow down, they understand.  They don't a surprises, like when the load is not delivered when they thought.

If you'd like to talk about this great career, give me a call 214-206-1169.

What does a Freight Broker Do?

A freight broker is the negotiator between a distributor of goods and the carrier. A key component of the job of a freight broker is to develop relationships with shippers and truckers.  A broker will find a company that needs a load of goods moved from one part of the country to another.  The broker then finds a trucker or carrier that can pick up the load and deliver it to the desired destination for the shipper.  Ideally, the freight broker will also find a load that needs to be moved from the drop off location of the first load back to the original destination.   They might find multiple loads and work out a plan for a trucker to pick up and drop off along the way.  The freight broker needs good communication, computer and telephone skills.

The freight broker is a master problem solver.  They figure out the best way to get goods moved, negotiate fair pricing, watch the movement of loads to assure on time delivery as well as resolve any issue with the delivery.  They must build trust with shippers and with carriers.  They are a key element in the distribution of goods across our country and sometimes beyond the borders.  The manufacturers have facilities to run.  The carriers have to be on the road.  The broker is a help to both parties.  Weather, traffic and truck maintenance must be factored in.

Similar to insurance agents and realtors, the freight broker can work independently or as an agent of a larger freight brokerage.

I started my freight brokerage school after many years as a freight broker because I have found great success and fulfillment as a freight broker.  If you'd like to see if this is a good career possibility for you give me a call.

Eye Opening Career Training

Eyes alert were needed to avoid an accident this week in the frigid weather throughout most of the country. Eye opening was one of the descriptions of our recent freight broker course.  The Dallas area had snow, blizzard, sleet and mayhem yet we had a great group of attendees at our Freight Broker Training Course.   A couple of our grad from this week’s class had some great things to say about their insightful week with us:
“Brooke Training was definitely eye opening and informative for those new to the industry and for those with industry experience.  I believe they have provided a great foundation to become an agent or potential broker. Instructors are very knowledgeable.  Bringing in guest speakers in the industry helped to provide us more insight to the wants and needs in the transportation industry.  Highly recommend the class for future students.

Attending Brooke’s Training School is not only learning about the freight brokerage, but also learning about life concepts and principals to be successful in the business.  Thanks Vinny for taking the time to show us the tools to not only be successful in the transportation business but also being able to use the process to improve in my personal life aspect as well. Definitely the best investment I ever made.  Thank you! “-- Nipphaphone Thammarong

The class was very informative.  It has opened up my eyes on how much the transportation field is really needed.  The class taught me the difference in what a broker or broker agent can do.  And all sorts of information that the class has given me on how we can get a jump start on my business.  Thank you for the opportunity to take this class.  It has been a whole lot of learning experience. - Keo

What does a Freight Broker Do?

Freight brokers are the guys who get products moved from the manufacturer to the seller or from a wholesaler to a retailer or from one seller to another.  Many manufacturers have their own trucks to move many of their goods but sometimes they need extra trucks and will call on a freight broker to cover those loads.  To make money as a freight broker you need to be a good listener.  To begin I tell my freight broker students you will be spending most of your day making phone calls, hunting down business.  Look at every phone call as an opportunity to help someone out with a need.  Ask good questions and listen actively to their answer.  I encourage my freight broker students to find a niche and then learn all they can about that niche.  Find a niche that involves something you love.  If you like cars, you could specialize in transporting vehicles.  Since more and more people buy their cars online, transporting cars from seller to buyer can be quite a good gig.  Transporting vehicles involves understanding specialized transporters and finding truckers that have those kind of trucks.  If you love to work out perhaps exercise equipment is more your speed.   Or if you like ice cream you could specialize in freezer trucks.

Stay abreast of the news and you can get ideas on what industries are on the upswing.  You can develop your niche around an up and coming industry.

The transportation industry is an exciting and dynamic industry with great opportunity for those who are willing to put the work in.

Join us for our next live class or take the course online.  The live class is one week with an additional week if you'd like advanced training.
