No Convoy Needed

I spend a lot of my day interacting with carriers and shippers. I am often asked my thoughts on the "trucker's strike" that has made the news in Canada and iscoming to America.

Truckers organizing "The People's Convoy" are set to leave California and travel to Washington DC to protest "vaccine mandates" February 23. Yet according to Overdrive   "OSHA clarified vax mandates wouldn't apply to most truck drivers.    The ETS (emergency temporary standards) does not apply to individuals who work alone.  The labor secretary reinforced this in a statement to CNBC.

Truck drivers are usually in a cab by themselves when they are driving across country.

Most news sources claim the truckers are mad about vaccination mandates.

That is a small piece of what has gotten them stirred up. As reported in Landline media, Brian Brase, an organizer of the convoy, says it is not about vaccines at all but about "human and constitutional rights".

I've been in the transportation industry for over 3 decades.  I am a huge advocate for truckers.  They keep our economy going.  They have an important and very exhausting job.  Without those hardworking men and women America's economy would come to a screeching halt.

Profit margin for a trucker is only about 5%. As long as I've been talking with truck drivers they have been frustrated with the costs that limit their profit.  The drivers drive and maintain their truck.  They farm out everything else to brokers, factoring companies, etc.  Their frustrations are fueled by listening to other drivers and reading stuff on the internet.

As an advocate, I thrive on teaching these amazing people ways to help their bottom line.  So many truckers come through our school with a totally new outlook on their industry and better ways to run their business.  They think coming in that they understand the transportation industry but quickly learn it is a much bigger puzzle than what they've been putting together.

I invite all truck drivers to come through Brooke Transportation Training. They will learn how to find their own loads, how to streamline their operation and be inspired to greater heights.

Call me 214-206-1169 and I can tell your more.  No pressure, we will just talk through

your situation and I'll tell you my thoughts.  I always have a lot of thoughts.

"A Semester of Info in One Week"

We had a recent student from New Jersey come to our Atlanta freight broker-training course.  She had no prior experience in the transportation industry.  She wrote a letter to her instructor Drake:

Dear Drake,

Thank you for your continued support and providing information on the building of the process of becoming successful in this "business."

I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn about another fascinating career path.  I was the only one in the session who did not know very much about the transportation side of moving freight throughout the country and the world---it was truly an eye-opening experience.  I have studied marketing from the academic side, but never from the physical movement side.  You gave us a "grand" tour of the other side of the coin--the logistics of movement.  It was overwhelming in the beginning, but became clearer as the week progressed.  Your one-week presentation provided a semester of information.  You were patient, answered questions with enthusiasm and were not satisfied until we understood.  It was evident that you were passionate about teaching and the field.

Thank you for the personal touch, the professional coaching and teaching style.

Sincerely,

Celia D. Younger, PME Transport, LLC

I appreciate my excellent instructors and eager students who give our school greatness.

Dream BIG

"Let your dreams be bigger than your fears, your actions louder than your words, and your faith stronger than your feelings." – Unknown

Are you conjuring up some big dreams?  Have you ever dreamed of having a career that is fast paced, fulfilling and has great earning potential?  You may say, well who hasn’t?  We all hope to find a career or build up a career that gives us satisfaction and does more that just pays the bills.  I started working in the transportation industry after I completed my college degree.  I have worked in just about every sector of the industry for many different transportation companies.  I found my life work in the industry as a freight broker.  I enjoy bantering with truckers as much as I enjoy fishing with shippers so being a freight broker came very naturally to me.  I developed relationships with professionals on both sides of the aisle.

After decades as a freight broker I had a new dream.  I had a dream to build a freight broker training school to teach others the process that helped me succeed.  I wanted to teach brokers to work with integrity and determination.  I know that those two elements will get a broker far in this industry.   I have had to clean up the mess left behind by shady broker deals.  That motivated me to teach new brokers to be successful and honest.

After teaching our live training class for a while I had another dream.  I wanted to expand that training by developing an online course.  Now anyone can take the course in their pajamas with a laptop.

All along the way I’ve had various dreams with my wife, with my daughters and with my clients.  I have found much fulfillment in my life by following by dreams and letting some dreams go.  But without a dream I wouldn’t move forward.

Freight Brokering is not a get rich quick proposition.  It is a true career that has practically unlimited potential for earning.  Landing the first client can be tough but once you get the first load successfully delivered, the road gets easier.  Successful brokers build a book of business and faithfully service those clients.  A well-served client becomes a repeat client and helps establish the credibility and reliability of the broker.  Why not make that your dream?

Call me and tell me about your dream.

Moving forward,

Jeff Roach

All in all the experience was enriching.  Glad I was able to attend and hope that I can take all this information and make a great business out of this. THANK YOU.   - S.Garcia

I've learned so much this week. The instructors are full of knowledge and experience. I enjoyed the sales portion of the course. Met a lot of great people. This is definitely a must take course for individuals and companies that are thinking of getting into the transportation business.  -Cleo E.

The program was great. Brooke has a lot of knowledgeable people and they are very open to sharing their knowledge with you. I also like the fact that they have multiple people come in to teach and share information with you.
The experience opened a new door for me as an owner operator who is trying to expand my operations and diversify our service. I also like that Brooke is open to help you start this new journey.  - M. Godwin

Awesome experience! Being in transportation since 1999, it was great to see what it takes
from beginning to end in transporting freight. The instructors are great and the best part is
that they are in the industry. Take the time to come to the class if you're interested in
brokering. It's well worth the time and money!  - G. Ellington

What Does It Take to Become a Freight Broker?

I was reading through some of the comments left on my blog posts this morning.  One reader asked "what does it take to become a freight broker?".  There are books and courses with much information in answering this question, but here is my quick attempt to explain some of what it takes.

There are many character qualities and professional skills needed to succeed as a freight broker.

A freight broker is the middle man between the manufacturers or distributors of goods and the carriers or the vehicles that actually do the hauling.  As the middle man, the freight broker must have good communication skills.  They need the ability to be able to clearly negotiate terms to both sides.  The broker will need to communicate on the phone, via email and text.  The broker will determine their customer's preferred methods of communication.  This is a fast paced industry so being adept at communicate, in the most efficient manner, is key.

After the negotiation, the broker will then need the organization skills to coordinate the pick up of the goods, movement of the goods then delivery of the goods.  When you are a freight broker agent, your freight brokerage will help with some of the logistics.  A freight broker is always on call as a load is being moved so that if any snags happen they can alert their customer.  A truck may encounter bad weather, traffic accidents, detours, sickness and other slow downs along the way.  When this happens the freight broker will keep all parties informed to the plan of action in getting the load delivered.

So two key qualities needed to be a good freight broker are communication and organizational skills.  I will talk about other qualities in my next couple of blog entries.

At Brooke Transportation Training Solutions we train a diverse group of students every month.  The skills we teach are key to getting up and running fast, as a freight broker.  And the faster you are up and running the faster you will start turning a profit.  Our students actually start booking loads while in class.

Good luck in whatever adventure you take.  The skies the limit as a freight broker.

Knowledgeable Freight Brokers

We finished up training new freight brokers last week at our Dallas/Fort Worth class.  Our lead instructor Vinny did an amazing job at teaching and interacting with the class.  We asked them to write out their impression of the week of class.  Here's the edited version of some of their responses:

“Good Class.  Gained knowledge and experience in how to become a Broker Agent or Broker.“ --David Johnson

“What I like about the course is that the instructor allows students to dialogue and ask questions during the lesson... constantly reiterating the material so that it’s learned and not memorized.

The depth of knowledge that Vinny has is unbelievable.  What I am learning more than anything is that Vinny, is not only teaching me how to be a broker but is giving me the tools necessary to be a salesperson for any aspect of life.

I’m truly excited that I selected this course... I’m  ready to hit the ground running.”--Makita C. Wells

“(
I benefited from) gaining knowledge about being a Broker/Agent in a demanding transportation industry. Vinnie is great.”-- Michael Thompson

Learned good amount of brokerage of sales & marketing in this business.  Great discussion about special situations.

Small group.  Good communication.  Good knowledge.  Felling motivated to continue. Confidence.  Realistic Goals.

I like everything. -- Will Tang

Thank you Vinnie and the gang for teaching.  Good luck graduates with your new exciting career as a freight broker.

Hire a Hero

-->
We train a lot of veterans in becoming freight brokers and freight broker agents. I have spent time talking with these brave souls about their service and the transition into civilian live.  In the process, I have gained even more respect for those who so courageously serve our country.  I applaud J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. for their part in employing our veterans through “Hiring our Heroes”.  Here are excerpts from an article I read on this:

J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. Partners with Hiring Our Heroes and FASTPORT to Hire Transitioning Veterans and Their Spouses into the Transportation Industry

LOWELL, Ark., May 30, 2014 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program and its FASTPORT partner welcomed J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc. as a new colleague in its effort to find promising career opportunities for veterans and their spouses nationwide. J.B. Hunt is continuing its mission to help America’s military families by connecting military men and women and their spouses to job opportunities. As part of the partnership, J.B. Hunt will supply a fast-track to meaningful employment to veterans and their spouses in their driving force as well as office support. J.B. Hunt will provide mentorship throughout the recruiting and on-boarding process as well as assistance in relocation where it applies.

…”With this program we’re providing veterans with military equipment operations experience a fast-track to a great career. Our founder, Mr. Hunt was an army serviceman, became a truck driver, built this business and was one of the great entrepreneurs in the industry. We need more service men and women to follow in his footsteps.”

Be sure to thank any military personnel you see.  It is because of them and those before them that we have our freedom.

Success is Eminent

I thrive on hearing confident words from graduates of our training course.  My favorite phrase from this most recent group of graduates for our Dallas live class is “I am more than certain success is eminent.”  He learned not only the nuts and bolts of being freight broker but more importantly he gained the confidence needed to push forward.  As a freight broker you must make a lot of phone calls to establish a client base.  You just have to be able to understand that “no” is an encouraging word not a discouraging word.  When someone says “no” to your offer to help with their shipments that just means you are one step closer to a “yes”.   They aren’t saying they don’t think you are capable of the job; they just don’t need your help now.

Read through a couple of testimonies from our recent class.  Thanks Vinny for teaching with such excellence every month.  Thank you graduates for spending a week with us.  We wish you much prosperity in your new career.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the class.  Not only did it meet my every expectation, but exceeded my desires.  I wanted to learn the freight broker business, and I learned of my “life” business.  I am more than certain success is eminent and my business will thrive, as a result of all I have been through.  Vinny is the man!"--Sean Thomas

"Brooke Training class was very good for me.  It was very informative and interesting.  You learn about yourself, trucking industry, and most of all the broker business from start to finish.  I would definitely recommend to a friend." --Phadra Riser

"It was a very interesting class.  I learned a lot of things in a few days.  Instructor was very supportive and communicative.  I made a good decision to take this training class.  Thanks!" --Lorenc Aleksi
