Fuel SurCharge Calculator

One of the most important things to do in the trucking business...well in any business, is to always be watching your cashflow.   If you figure out a more economical way, implement it and you will improve your bottom line, your profit margin...the amount of cash that ends up in your pocket.

OOIDA posted a great tool:  a fuel surcharge calculator.  I've copied the article for your use. https://www.ooida.com/trucking-tools/fuel-surcharge-calculator/

You make more money by either doing more work, or by figuring out how to lower your operating costs.

Hope this tool helps some out there.  Add comments on this blog as ways you have saved money in our industry.

A Father's Role

The father in any family sets the tone or culture for that family.  He should be a role model, a mentor, an encourager and a challenger.  Yet many of us and many in our community have not lived up to that role.  Well...It is never too late.  Start now being one other's look up to.

At Brooke Training we try to go beyond teaching the transportation industry, we strive to be role models, mentors, encouragers and challengers to the people we are privileged to meet.

So on this Father's Day, I wonder who (in addition to your biological parents) has invested in you? Who has discerned wounds in your spirit? Who has taken you "home" for a season of listening and redirection? Who has taken a back seat to your own growth? Who is it that is always, always "in your corner"?

Or it may be that you now find yourself ready to pour some of that overflow into others who see you as their mentor, a parent, a friend. You honor those who have invested in you when you invest in others that God brings your way.

May this weekend be a time of gratitude for the opportunities we all have to mentor and be mentored by the men in our families and those who need a father figure.  I will spend time with my three girls, my 4 granddaughters and my beautiful bride.  I am blessed beyond measure.

Big Money in Dispatch/Intermodal

I'm happy to announce our newest consulting offering:

Dispatch and Intermodal (Rail) Consulting

Make more money and run an efficient operation by learning to be an expert dispatcher with Intermodal transportation knowledge from Consultants Tish Cozine and Jeff Roach.

Learn Dispatch

A dispatcher is needed in virtually every area of transportation.

You are the right-hand man of a freight broker, owner-operator, freight forwarder and trucking company.  A dispatcher is adept at handling all the behind the scenes work involved in getting freight moved.

A trucking company uses dispatchers to find loads for their trucks.  They may have a one-way load and call on the dispatcher to fill the truck on the way back.  This is a critical role for the carrier because they make no money on a “dead head” or a route with an empty or no trailer.

Learn how to professionally handle the logistics, paperwork, load boards and more.   Dispatchers work both independently and as employees of freight brokers, carriers and manufacturers.

Learn Intermodal

Gain skills in the use of several forms of transportation to get a load moved to the destination.  During this 3 day consultation  learn  how to convert a 53' van shipments to a 53' intermodal container.   Learn the ins and outs on how to operate the business.  Learn step-by-step best practices in intermodal transportation.

Some things covered in this consultation:

• Rail 101
• Door to Door Defined.
• The benefits of Intermodal
• Proper Intermodal Container Loading Procedure
• What is Transloading?
• Rail Terminology
• Rating/Dispatching

Tish brings over 12 years of experience moving freight across the railroads and would love to share that knowledge with you.   She truly is the best in the country, she does this work every day so she knows what she is teaching.  Jeff Roach has been in the transportation industry for 3 decades, first in dispatch, then sales, starting a brokerage and now Brooke Training.  Jeff has a wealth of knowledge.  He knows how the various areas of the transportation industry mesh.

They will coach you on how to develop the discipline needed to be a success, make money and fulfill your dreams.   Outpace your competition being well equipped to face the opportunities with knowledge and enthusiasm.

If you're interested in learning a new skill, growing your business financially and be able to provide another mode of transportation to your customer, contact us today for this 3 day consultation.

Martin Luther King, Jr

Today we celebrate the life and accomplishments of a great man,  Martin Luther King, Jr.  Although he didn't have a long life, he had a life of great impact that lives on in the dreams of others.

He was a Baptist Preacher who had a dream.  A dream that is one of the founding principals of our great United States. A dream that was God designed:  All men are created equal.  We are all made in the image of God.  We all have great value, not based on what we've done but on who made us.  We have purpose.  We have a life to live out the best we can.  Too often we measure our success on what we have accomplished, the rewards and bonuses we have received. But true success comes from being the best you can be.

Martin Luther King saw that America was not treating all men equal.  He felt God's call on his life to make a difference with his words and actions.   60 years after his assassination, we can still learn a lot about how to live our best life and encourage others to succeed from this man of integrity and courage.  He said many inspiring things. Here are a few of his great quotes:

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

"History will have to record the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people."

“A lie cannot live.”

“If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."

Take some time today to read more on the amazing life of this great man of American History.  Reflect on your own life, what is your purpose and how can you also make a positive impact in your piece of the world.

No Degree Required Career

Looking for a great career but you don't have a degree?  The transportation industry has fast paced career opportunities that don't require a degree.  Freight brokers help move products across the country by working with the carriers/truckers and the product distributors.  Freight Brokers often specialize in certain types of freight like automobiles, groceries or retail displays.

I have been in the freight brokering business for several decades.  I built a successful freight brokerage from the ground up. After years in the industry I decided to start a freight broker training school to pass on much of the knowledge I gained along the way.  I also have a great desire to mentor freight brokers who want to be professionals of high integrity.

This is an industry that is full of great potential for anyone who is willing to put in the work and be honest.  I believe that you may seem to win in the short run by cutting corners. But in the long run those who rise above and work with unquestionable ethics have the greatest gain.  They also sleep a lot better at night.

If you'd like a career that is demanding and rewarding give me a call.  I have freight broker training courses all over the country.  I love to consult with those in the business that need some advice.

Give me a call, no pressure, let's just talk about the possibility of a new future for you.

The Sky's the Limit

Would you like a career where the potential for growth is in your hands?  Our mantra at Brooke Transportation Training Solutions is "The Sky is the Limit with Freight Broker Training".  We chose that tagline because that is what we have seen happen in the lives of many of our freight broker training school graduates.  A freight broker with the right training and support can achieve a great income and a great lifestyle working from home or anywhere with a computer, internet and a phone.  The sky is the limit.

That is what happened in my life.  If you knew me as a child you would not peg me as one most likely to succeed in life.  I had a lazy eye, so I was not perceived to be able to succeed in school.  I was put in the "special" class because I was a cross eyed kid.  But I was also a hard worker and a natural salesman. (and I had surgery on my crazy looking eye)

I worked hard to graduate from college with the help of my beautiful bride. I have worked in just about every position in the freight transportation industry.  I learned the business working my way up.  I have found great success and have been able to provide a great life for those I love along the way.

I didn't look the part of a successful entrepreneur but that is what I became.  I started a freight broker training school to share what I learned the hard way.  I also wanted to teach others that you can succeed in this industry with integrity.  Choose to always work with honesty.  You will not regret it.

If you are thinking about jumping into the transportation industry.  Give me a call.  I talk with many professionals about this career.  I will ask you a few questions to determine if I think you have the right skills to succeed as a freight broker.  If freight brokering is not for you I can suggest some other career training opportunities, many with job offers at the end, through our online courses.--click the online career center tab on our site.

A Truck Driver's Story

Recently Robert, a laid off truck driver, gave me a call. His wife had found my blog on an internet search as she was helping her man in his search for a new career.  She gave Robert the number. Robert called me to ask me a lot of questions about our freight brokers classes. We had a great talk.  Here is his story:

“I’ve been a truck driver for 19 years.  For the past 6 years I have been a contract driver for the post office driving a route between distribution centers in Virginia.  The post office stopped my route in March.  This is the first time in my life I have been laid off.  The first time I have applied for unemployment. I could get another truck driving job but I would most likely have had to move.  With my post office route my wife and I were able to move out to some acreage and buy some ponies.  As a freight broker I will be able to work out of my ranch, take care of my ponies and be with my family.

I found the freight broker online training course through my local community college’s partnership with the online education company that administers the course written by Brooke Training.  I researched it online.  It was perfect.  I could do all my work from home.  I have 6 months to complete the course but my plan is to finish in 2 months, get started and still have 4 months I can go back and review some of the things in the course.

And I won’t even have to pay for the course.  My unemployment contact gave me the information needed to apply for a Federal program in the WIA or Worker Investment Act.  I called my governor’s office to find out who heads up this program in Virginia.
I found I was eligible to apply for a grant, if approved I won’t have to pay anything back.

Ideally I want to be an independent freight broker but realistically I know I’ll need to start as an agent for an established freight broker.  They’ll help me with cash flow, legalities and other expenses.  It is a low cost business to start.

It is a little scary, but I’m looking forward to my new career“

Robert is taking advantage of a great opportunity.  It is an absolutely great time to become a freight broker.  Economic indicators show an upturn in the transportation industry.  Give me a call with any questions  214-206-1169.  Join us for an upcoming live class or like Robert learn online.

Be a Specialist

If you were diagnosed with a peculiar disease would you rather see a generalist or a specialist?

It seems most every industry need specialists because of the complexities of technology, the value of really understanding a specific area of business and the necessity of honing skills continually.  We have recently invested more in our Google advertising to let people know about our school.  I called the consultant I have been working with for years on my Internet set up needs to ask if he could help with our online advertising.  He said he’d recommend we call a google specialist.  He explained that although he’d read much about online advertising and understands how it works, he does not actually do online advertising for clients every day.  The Google specialists do.  They keep up with changes in the way Google ranks websites, understands how to get ads seen and producing as well as all the other nuances in that niche of the advertising world.   As the internet has grown so has the number of specialists in that arena.  There are specialists in search engine optimization, specific social media, online copywriting, e-commerce, webinars, website designers, and the list goes on and on.

Freight brokers can greatly benefit through specialization or finding their niche.  Specializing gives you a focus.  I have one freight broker school graduate who decided to focus on vehicle transportation.  She learned all she could about transporters.  She studied the automobile industry.  She learned about the lanes autos travel in the new car industry as well as the pre-owned segment of the market.  It took her awhile to learn what she needed.  Then she had to convince clients she knew how to transport their vehicles in time and on budget.  Once she got a client on board and had a little bit of a track record her freight broker business took off.  She is a shining example of the benefit of specialization.

You can watch her video on our website homepage.  transportationtraining.com.  “A Successful Freight Broker’s Story”.

If you are interested in learning to be a freight broker, well that is our specialization.  Our instructors have years in the business of freight brokering and in teaching.  We specialize in helping our graduates find a great career because the "sky is the limit with freight broker training".

How to Become a Freight Broker

-->
Alison Green at ehow wrote this excellent article on how to become a freight broker.

Get the Education
  • Competent freight brokers are proficient in computing freight rates, negotiating contracts, finding reliable freight providers, tracking cargo and using broker software. To gain this knowledge, pursue a freight broker certificate program. In addition, you can earn an associate degree in business to enhance your knowledge of sales and marketing techniques, and gain an edge over other job candidates. It is also possible to start as a freight agent, who works under a licensed freight broker to gain the experience and know-how required to become a broker.
Master the Skills
  • To excel in this profession, you must be an accomplished negotiator with strong customer-service skills. The job involves finding carriers for shippers who are often unwilling to meet market freight rates. You must be skilled at negotiating with potential carries to lower their freight charges, while encouraging shippers to up their offer. This calls for strong math skills to make accurate calculations of freight charges, service commissions and other costs. Multitasking and coordinating skills are essential, too. During busy periods, for example, you must be able to attend to the needs of several shippers.
Meet Registration Requirements
  • You must be licensed by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Career Safety Administration. To earn the Broker Authority license, you must pay a licensing fee and be a holder of a surety bond. As of 2014, the FMCSA required brokers of freight to have surety bonds worth $75,000. The Transporters Intermediaries Association awards the Certified Freight Broker designation to brokers who pass a certification exam. Although this certification is voluntary, earning it can improve your prospects for employment.
Get a Job
  • As a qualified and licensed freight broker, you can start out by working for established freight brokerages. After gaining vast work experience, building professional relationships with several carriers and raising sufficient capital, you can establish your own brokerage. To run a successful business, focus on hiring agents who can help you gain clients in various regions. Strong skills in personnel management, and service pricing and marketing are must-haves, too. In accordance with FMCSA requirements, you must list a process agent in each state your business operates

Freight brokering is a fast paced, exciting career.  I've been in this industry for 3 decades and have enjoyed the challenge, the relationships and the income it has afforded me.  If have an interest in learning more give me a call.  No pressure I will just talk to you about my experience and what my freight broker school has to offer.  We believe in training brokers to success with integrity.

Transportation Industry Legislation

A new Maryland bill will make it easier for veterans to get into the trucking industry.

I edited a post by Bethany Rodgers brodgers@newspost.com | 13 comments

Delegate David E. Vogt III has passed legislation that affirms a Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration program to help veterans secure commercial driver’s licenses.
Vogt’s legislation deals with commercial driver’s licenses for military veterans.
Currently, the MVA waives a skills test for the commercial license for veterans who have left the military within the past year. To qualify for the waiver, the veterans must also pass the CDL knowledge test, have a good driving record, have at least two years of related driving experience in the military and have a certification from their commanding officers.
Although this program already exists, Vogt’s bill would include it in state law, meaning that the MVA officials could not choose on their own to discontinue it, according to an agency spokesman. The proposal also directs the MVA to explore providing CDL training courses on Maryland’s military bases.
Vogt, R-District 4, said the proposal will make the state more welcoming to military veterans and help former service members land employment in the trucking industry.
“Programs like this will help provide well-paying jobs and will turn the climate to be more friendly for our veterans and retirees,” said Vogt, who served in the Marine Corps for eight years.
Many veterans have experience operating heavy machinery, so waiving the skills test makes sense, Vogt said. Offering on-base CDL training would also extend these vocational opportunities to military personnel who aren’t assigned to drive large equipment, he added.
Estimates show that there are more than 428,000 military veterans living in Maryland, according to a fiscal analysis of Vogt’s bill. The unemployment rate for Maryland veterans stood at 5.9 percent in 2013, according to state data.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan will decide whether to sign the bill into law. The spokeswoman had favorable comments for Vogt’s bill on helping veterans get commercial licenses.
“The measure is effective in many states, as it lends itself to assisting veterans who already have a skill-set without making them go through additional training, testing, and expense,” Erin Montgomery, Hogan’s spokeswoman, said in a prepared statement.
Follow Bethany Rodgers on Twitter: @BethRodgersFNP.

Let us all think of ways to make it easier for veterans to assimilate back into society after a stint in the military.  Our school trains many veterans to become freight brokers.  We also have many truck drivers who are ready to stop driving but still want to stay in the industry train to become freight brokers.

Think this might be a great career move for you?  Give me a call.

Do You Need to Be Trained to be a Freight Broker?

I often get asked,"Is training worth the cost?"

I answer by telling my story of why I started a training school.  I have been in the transportation industry since I graduated from college (with lots of help of my girlfriend, now wife).  It is the perfect business for me because I can be salty with the drivers then clean up to meet with the “suits”.  I enjoy the fast paced nature of the business.  I fell into the white glove priority delivery niche of the business.  When a shipment has got to be there on time I dog it til it makes it.  I have always been a great salesman.  I won all the top sales award for all the fundraisers I ever helped with from elementary school on up.  So being a freight broker comes naturally for me.  As a freight broker I sell to shippers and negotiate with carriers.  I like being in the middle.  What I have not liked about the business is there are a few in this business, as in any business, who lack integrity.  That is a main reason I started my school.  I have been highly successful without compromising my principles.  In the short run it sometimes feels like the cheaters are winning but in the long run you get what you give.  Work an honest day and get an honest return.  Trust and be trusted.  Lie and be lied to.  It is a simple concept but few truly grasp the impact of it.

I read comments on forums that rag on freight broker trainers as shysters, out to get money and give you nothing.  Not all the students who attend Brooke Training have been successful brokers.  But it is not because we don’t teach the right stuff.  Some fail because they don’t work the process.  Others fail because they stop too soon.  And others fail because it simply is not the right fit for their personality.   I teach a successful process.  I know it is successful because I have been successful with it, as have others.

That is why I started a training school to teach how to do this business with integrity and to share the process I honed over decades in the industry.  Each month our students have the opportunity to give us feedback on the class.  I send a blog with those testimonials each month and we post the testimonials on the website.  These are not my words, not made up words but the words of actual students just as they finished the week long course.

Have any questions?  Give me a call 214-206-1169.  We'd enjoy seeing you in a class real soon.

"Great instructors, very fun and informational.  I would recommend this class to anyone.  It was nice having real brokers here and getting to hear what they had to say.

I would love to come back for the advanced class." --Jacob Pratt

"I met a great group of new people who I believe and want to become new partners or collaborators in the Freight Logistics business in the future.

I gained in depth insight on the various nuances of Freight Broking and it was helpful.

Vinny’s class was on point and covered more than I expected regarding sales/brokering techniques."
--Troy B.

 "
I wasn’t really sure what to expect out of the class.  Twenty years of driving experience and I was ready for a change.  This class showed me a completely different point of view about the industry.  The class was very informative and the instructors were excellent.  I am leaving with a great understanding of the Broker-Agent side of the industry.  I would definitely recommend this course to anyone serious about brokering." --
Adams Banks

"Very informative.  I was beyond terrified upon starting this course.  Vinny is very knowledgeable about sales and the transportation business.  He held my attention and was very funny.  The course changed my whole outlook on the trucking business from both angles.  Tish is incredible and I loved the way she handled her business.

Overall this class was awesome!!!  Love on top of love all the positive things that I received here.  I can honestly say that I feel comfortable starting my own brokerage business."--
Dee Mayberry

"The experience in the class or with the Brooke team was amazing.  Instructor Vinny was the right person to teach the class.  His energy and knowledge of sales and the industry exceeded my expectations coming to this class.

Tish as well did an awesome job with showing us her business and giving a real live snapshot of how the business can be.  Overall if I had to rate this class, I would rate it a ten hands down.  I will be coming back to the class for continuing education.  Thanks for having me and look forward to future classes, and relationships.

                               Experience:  Live calls to customers

                               Cold calling to Manufactures

                               Speaking with A.L.M.E."

--A. Lewis Sr.

"The class was very informative.  The teacher, Mr. Vinny, was awesome and patient with his teaching.  I like that he used different methods, not just reading, but participation methods.  I also saw that having companies come in to tell us about their company and wanting to hire us was great and beneficial for everyone.   Meeting Tish, was awesome too, because we got a chance to see what she does on a daily basis and she seems to be very successful with what she does, and that encourages me."

-- Robin Monley

"Great class.  Great instructors.  Very informative for beginners and for those that have had some experience in the trucking industry.

I had a great time in the class.  I was able to see the other side of the trucking industry and at the same time I learned the mistakes I was making as a carrier.  I loved the fact that they put you in “Hot Water” completely taking you out of your comfort zone.  I believe that helped me understand, my first week, what I could improve and what my strengths were."--M.A.

"As a carrier Brooke Broker Training Solutions was an awesome experience.  The instructor and instructors were informative to the point that it gave me confidence to run my business.

Brooke Transportation Training Solutions was great.  I would recommend it to everyone needing their service.
"  --K. B.

"In the past week, I have experienced some important values and principals, not only in freight brokering; more so as an individual.  I would like to share that one of the more important tools of freight brokering is that I have received is building bridges (relationships, trust, stability) for long term purposes.

In addition to receiving great understanding of freight brokering, I have to definitely say that I am leaving with something much more valuable than resource tools.  Thanks to the Brooke's staff:  Vinny, Tish, Bobby and the other speakers."  --Desmond Adams

"I would like to take the time to express my overwhelming sense of gratitude for the incredible abundance of knowledge shared by our instructors Vinny & Tish.  They went above and beyond to make sure the information being shared was thoroughly understood.  I will highly recommend BTTS to friends and family for years to come.

I am extremely happy with my decision to attend BTTS.  I only wish I could have attended sooner.  Our instructor Vinny is by far, one of, if not the best freight broker instructor in America!  I look forward to a long lasting relationship with BTTS.  Thank you Jeff & Janis for your vision in starting BTTS.  God Bless You!" -- Jessie Garcia, Jr.

What does a Freight Broker Do?

Freight brokers are the guys who get products moved from the manufacturer to the seller or from a wholesaler to a retailer or from one seller to another.  Many manufacturers have their own trucks to move many of their goods but sometimes they need extra trucks and will call on a freight broker to cover those loads.  To make money as a freight broker you need to be a good listener.  To begin I tell my freight broker students you will be spending most of your day making phone calls, hunting down business.  Look at every phone call as an opportunity to help someone out with a need.  Ask good questions and listen actively to their answer.  I encourage my freight broker students to find a niche and then learn all they can about that niche.  Find a niche that involves something you love.  If you like cars, you could specialize in transporting vehicles.  Since more and more people buy their cars online, transporting cars from seller to buyer can be quite a good gig.  Transporting vehicles involves understanding specialized transporters and finding truckers that have those kind of trucks.  If you love to work out perhaps exercise equipment is more your speed.   Or if you like ice cream you could specialize in freezer trucks.

Stay abreast of the news and you can get ideas on what industries are on the upswing.  You can develop your niche around an up and coming industry.

The transportation industry is an exciting and dynamic industry with great opportunity for those who are willing to put the work in.

Learning A Career wearing PJs.

Online Courses allow you to learn anywhere you have a computer with internet access.  You can lay in your bed with a laptop and actually prepare for a new career.  Instead of watching another worthless show on television, James decided to watch our freight broker training onlinecourse.

James, a recent student sent me an email about his experience taking the Basic Freight Broker courseonline.  He points out specific modules he enjoyed and references the areas my wife Janis and I recorded.   Here’s an edited version of what James said:

“…I enjoyed the method by which you have developed the (basic freight broker) course. In the second module, Lessons 38, 44 & 45...those are the ones with Jeff speaking. I absolutely love them. Lesson 38 was straight, hard-core sales.

Module 44 and  45 was the best example of a phone call ever put on tape. Jeff had no tension in his voice, stuck to his main objective and had Janis involved. I believe she would accept higher rates. That was great.

New to the business, in my mind I needed to hear the phone call. It was knowledge based. It made me write down more questions for my own research.

Thanks I enjoyed it.

James Y. "

Thanks James, for taking our course.  And thanks for sending us this email on what you thought of the learning experience.  Don’t know if you actually took the course in your pajamas, but you could have.    We wish you lots of success and know we are just a phone call away, when you have a question or need encouragement in your grand new adventure in freight brokering.

Freight Brokers Trained

We graduated another fine group of students from our basic freight broker training class.  According to these folks, the class is a great place to start in this business.  They learned more than they expected and gained confidence to proceed.  Here’s what they had to say:

Brooke Transportation is a great place to start in the freight transportation industry.  In just one week I have the knowledge and confidence to start and run my own business.  I would highly recommend family, friends, and veterans such as myself to look into this field and take the opportunity for a great place to train in Brooke Transportation and Solutions. --Purvis Jones

My experience this week with Brooke team has been great.  I’ve learned more about the freight broker business in 5 days than I ever thought I would.  Brooke training is a great place to learn about the Freight transportation industry, and if I can give anybody advice looking to become a Freight Broker or Agent they need to come to a Brooke Training class first. --Carlton White

The Brooke Training course is very value for start the business for freight.  I learned pretty much knowledge from them.  I will tell my friends about this class is good to learn knowledge about the freight broker.  Teacher is a very nice person.  Thanks! –Yiming Chen

Boost Your Earning

I have been a salesman for a long time.  Just ask my mom.  At four I was likely to barter off my play dough convincing my playmates that my blue dough built better snakes than theirs.  I'm one of those who could sell Popsicles to an Eskimo.  It comes natural to me.  But I recognize that even though selling and customer service come easy to me, I still need to keep learning.  I try to learn new ways to approach my job, my day, my life.  If we stop learning we start stagnating and that is just not a good look:).

The greatest form of learning is teaching someone else what you know.  You must know your stuff in order to teach another.  I love training new freight brokers.  I love being a freight broker.  Every day I am out trying to serve the transportation industry.  I am continually learning new things to implement and to teach others.  I am a working freight broker always learning.  Be a student of your current customers so you can serve them more effectively.  Be a student of potential customers to learn where they could use your assistance.  I look at sales as a big learning fest.  I learn how to serve my customers and they learn to trust me with more.

Go out and learn something new today.  Get your brain engaged.  Learn your way to a brighter tomorrow.

Still moving,

Jeff
