Economic Boom

Just finished reading a Washington Times article by Patricia Hill Shale Oil Fuels Boom in U.S. Economy.

 It is amazing what new technology has unleashed.  Because of American genius in finding a way to extract oil from shale, a natural resource found in plentiful supply in various parts of the U.S., we as a nation may once again become energy independent.  Our energy costs are going to drop.  Not only will we not need to buy oil from other countries to supply our need,  other countries are building manufacturing plants here because of the lower cost for energy, bringing more manufacturing jobs here.

Patricia’s article focuses on the boom that is happening in Corpus Christi because of shale.  She mentions many other areas of the country that are enjoying this economic boost as well.

This booming industry will increase the need for freight brokers all over, to negotiate the transportation of an abundance of products needed for shale production.  As I’ve posted about before, finding a niche in the transportation industry is one way to develope loyal customers.  When a shipper is confidant in your ability to ship their product they will call on you again and again.

Zig Ziglar is one of my greatest inspirations.  I have built my company and my personal life on a lot of his sayings.  He is the king of a positive attitude. This picture is a view out my window.  Now that helps me keep a good attitude.  I don't have a mansion but God sure painted me a great picture to enjoy every day out my window.

Know that when you deal with me, I keep my word.  I keep my promises.  That is what I purpose to do.  If I ever break a promise I purpose to right the wrong quickly.  That is more of a challenge than it sounds, I think.  Keeping your word goes beyond not lying.  In keeping your word you do what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it with no excuses without an expectation of reward.   Our world teaches us to spin our words, in other words tell the truth mostly but word it to your benefit.  Massage the words so they sound better.  We've learned that from the media, from politicians and from advertising.  How often do others really check the facts after all?  That is why we hear so many empty promises and are tempted to fall for the get rich quick schemes, be thin in a week promises and take a pill to solve any ill ads.

I know in the long run, we are treated as we treat others.  Cheaters get cheated.  Encouragers get encouraged.  Eventually, we all get paid back the way we doled it out.  We have all probably been the target of a scam or two.  Some scams have tragic consequences, some are just an irritant.  But we can  be confidant in knowing that the scammer will suffer consequences of cheating others.  We need to make smart choices and set healthy boundaries with those who are not living with integrity.  In the grand scheme God is in control even when we think we are calling the shots.

Take your focus off what went wrong in your day.  Focus on what went right.  Post an inspirational photo on facebook or your blog to try to share your good attitude.  Don't try to get even, just smile and be thankful for all that has gone right in your life.

Avoiding Increased Freight Broker Costs

My last blog was on cost increases in the freight brokerage industry.  The new transportation bill requires a $75,000 bond to be carried by all freight brokers.  But if you become a freight broker agent you do not need $75 thousand to get started.  A freight broker agent is similar to a real estate agent or an insurance agent or a franchisee.  Yet the cost to get in is a lot less than buying a franchise.  The agent represents the brokerage.  The brokerage covers the bond costs and is a support to the agent in many other ways.  The agent is their own boss but has the support of the larger brokerage.  It is the best of both worlds.  As an agent you chart your own future.  You work hard to find loads and carriers for your brokerage and both parties win.

In our course we teach our students how to open a brokerage and how to be an agent.    I've done both.  I've had my own brokerage and found great success.  I've been an agent for others and found great success.

Freight Broker Bond Increase

The most recently passed transportation bill has great impact on our industry as a whole and some very specific ramifications for brokers.

Under the new bill, the bond requirements for freight brokers will increase to $75,000 in October so the cost to be a freight broker will be higher than before.    The down side is that it will be a larger leap to be an independent freight broker financially.  Yet the cost still remains significantly less than most start-ups or franchises.

The upside is that this is still a very affordable line of work for someone willing to work hard to find success.  The higher cost will deter fly by nighters to jump into freight brokerage.   

The best way to succeed is to be educated in the most efficient process in freight brokering.  We will continue to teach individuals to be freight brokers and freight broker agents.  We are working to understand all this new bill requires so that we can then teach our students the most current information.

Freight Brokers Job Openings

It is a great time to be a freight broker.  Just looked through the abundance of  job listings for freight brokers in Dallas.  There are a lot of companies that need agents to help them find truckers for loads.  Now is a great time to get trained and get going as a freight broker.

In my 30 year career in the industry I have found that it is really always a good time to be a freight broker.  There are always products that need to be moved across the country.  When the economy is ticking it is pretty easy to make money.  This is the time to show that you can get the job done, on time, in budget with integrity.  When the economy slows only the brokers that have taken care of their shippers get calls.
